Why do I have white patches in my nails?

Joanne Perez, MS, RDN, LD

Like most things nutrition related, experts are not in agreement when it comes to whether or not white marks on your nails could be caused by vitamin/mineral deficiencies. While some assert that a zinc, calcium or even vitamin C deficiency may be the cause, there is no clear connection/evidence that a lack if certain nutrient results in white patches.

Evidence has shown that white patches result from dehydration, infection, hormonal changes, injury or an allegic reaction to nail products. In rare circumstances, they could indication more medical condition.

The best way to keep your nails healthy is to eat a well-balanced and varied diet that includes fruits and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and healthy fats.
