Can you suggest some healthy snack alternatives?

Joanne Perez, MS, RDN, LD

The most important thing to remember when picking is your snack is that you want it to have some carbohydrate for energy, protein to help slow down the absoprtion of the carbohydrates so the energy is longer lasting and fat so it is palatable. My favoite snacks include the following: medium apple with string cheese, baby carrots and ping pong sized portion of hummus, cup of strawberries and 1/2 cup 2% cottage cheese, single serve packet of trail mix, single serve container of plain Greek yogurt with 1/2 cup blueberries, pear with 1 oz almonds and 1/2 avocado spread on either whole wheat crackers or toast.

If you want to keep some bars on hand, pick using the following criteria:

1. 10 grams of sugar (8 is better)

2. At least 3 gms of fiber

3. Similar amounts of sugar and protein. Never have more grams of sugar than protein. Try to shoot for a bar with at least 5 gms of protein.

4. Least amount of ingredients and ingredients you know and pronounce.
