Carbohydrates function to give you energy and support your brain and nervous system so it is important to make sure you have enough of them in your diet. But, you want to make sure you are eating carbohydrates that will give you lasting energy, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and limiting simple ones that will spike your blood sugar levels and then leave you hungry and sluggish.

Adding protein to your meals and snacks will help to slow down the absorption of the sugars so make sure to always have some type of protein each time you eat.

When putting your lunch together, try for 50% vegetables, 25% lean protein and 25% starches (whole grains whenever possible).
