For most people eating a well-balanced diet with lots of variety, supplements are not needed to meet your body's vitamin and mineral requirements. But there are some cases where supplementaion could be helpful.

If you are a woman of child bearing age who could become pregnant, it's a good idea to take a multivitamin that contains 400 ug of folic acid. In addition, pregnancy increases your iron needs, so iron supplementation is often necessary.

Men and women over the age of 50 may benefit for Vitamin D supplementation and, also, extra Vitamin B12.

Most vegans can meet all of their nutritional needs with planning and variety. Since vitamin B12 is only found in animal products, they must consume it from fortified products or supplements.

Other cases where supplementation may be a good idea are medical conditions (anemia, osteoporosis), the period following an operation or infection, when you are under extreme physical stress or if you are following a restricted, low calorie diet.

It's important to ask yourself why you think you might need a supplement. Supplements will not give extra energy or make up for poor eating habits.
